2018 Schedule

Both Beginner and Intermediate Classes are scheduled for the 2018 – book early to get a place! You must register. Beginner Level or previous experience required for Intermediate Level course.

As individual classes are filled, the Blacksmith Coordinator works with the Blacksmiths to see if additional classes can be added. There is no guarantee of new classes, but we encourage you to check back at this page to see if new classes have been added.

Note that this web page is updated frequently to indicate how many open spaces remain in each class. All classes have 4 open spaces unless otherwise marked. Please read the “Course Information” requesting that you confirm there are open spaces prior to making payment.

Beginner Level

Intermediate Level
Times: Friday 6:00 – 10:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

• November 23rd-25th – 1 open spot

There are 2 instructors for each class, either:

• Darwyne Hourie and Larry Maughan, or
• Mike Armstrong and Megan Carter

Beginner Level: In this class students will learn how to light and maintain a fire in a coal forge. Students will be introduced to forging tools, hammering techniques and proper tool use. Instructors demonstrate two or more beginner level projects and students will follow by making their own projects to take home. Cost: $200.00

Intermediate Level: Students will return to the forge for two and a half days to improve their blacksmithing skills. In this class students will practice what has been learned in the previous class and be introduced to traditional joinery, striking techniques and forge welding. Students will complete various projects throughout the weekend or make one project with various forged elements. Cost: $500.00

Course Information:

• Students will be supplied with: an anvil, hammers, safety glasses
• Students must wear natural fibre clothing (cotton or wool); a hat; leather shoes/boots; gloves. Students should bring their own brown bag lunch.
• ALL students will have to sign a waiver releasing the MHS from liability for any personal injury or damage. Upon signing the waiver and registration form, the MHS assumes that the student has read the Shop Safety Guidelines and agrees to adhere to them.
• Payment due at least two weeks prior to start date of course. Confirm with course organizer, bdcarlin@gmail.com that there are spaces available before submitting payment. Payment can be made online at Milton Historical Society website http://www.miltonhistoricalsociety.ca/ select the Donate button and in the field titled Purpose – type in blacksmith course date and registration fee. You may also pay by cheque made out to the Milton Historical Society at 16 James Street, Milton, Ontario L9T 2P4.
• PLEASE DO NOT make payment until you have received confirmation that a space is available for yourself or anyone you are registering on behalf of at that time. If payment is made prior to confirmation, or the attendee is not able to participate in the course, any bank cancellation fees will be passed on to the registrant.
